Selling Online in Ghana

How to sell clothes online in Ghana: a 2026 playbook

To sell clothes online in Ghana, pick a narrow niche, shoot every piece flat and on a body with your phone, and publish measurements in centimetres and inches. Sell where buyers already are: Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp first, then Jumia or your own store. Take MoMo through Paystack or Hubtel, confirm cash-on-delivery orders, and publish a clear exchange policy.

Which clothes sell fastest online in Ghana?

Treat any list of fast sellers as a starting point, not a promise. Jumia's seller hub for Ghana names Fashion and Apparel, including footwear, among its strongest categories, driven by young shoppers on mobile. Within fashion it points to local fabrics such as Ankara and Kente sets, kids' fashion, African print accessories, leather sandals and native slippers, and activewear.

Clothes also sell around dates on the Ghanaian calendar: weddings, church, funerals, graduation, back to school and Christmas. A seller who owns one of those moments, say ready-to-wear funeral outfits in black and red, can speak to one buyer in every photo, caption and ad. A page with a bit of everything has to speak to everyone, and usually reaches no one in particular.

Source to fit the niche. Secondhand sellers buy bales at Kantamanto in Accra, new stock comes from wholesalers and importers, and made-to-order sellers work with a tailor. Start with small quantities, post pieces before you restock, and let the questions in your DMs tell you which sizes and colours to buy more of.

How do you take clothes photos that sell, on a phone?

You do not need a studio. You need daylight, a plain background and the same setup every time, so your page looks like one shop and not a pile of screenshots. Shoot near a window or outdoors in shade, avoid harsh midday sun, and wipe the lens first. Then show every piece in three ways:

Show the real colour. Buyers will ask whether it looks the same as the picture, and a filter that turns wine into red earns you an exchange. Say who is wearing it and in what size, for example "Model is 170 cm (5 ft 7 in), wearing size M". That one line answers many sizing questions before they reach your DMs.

  • Flat lay: the item laid flat on a plain sheet or floor and shot from directly above, so buyers see the full shape and print.
  • On a body: worn by a person or a mannequin, front, side and back, so buyers see length and fit.
  • Close-ups: fabric, stitching, buttons, zips and the label, plus a short try-on video for Reels, TikTok and WhatsApp Status.

How do you show sizes so buyers trust them?

A buyer who cannot try a piece on needs numbers they can check with a tape measure. Measure each style yourself, laid flat, and publish the results in centimetres and inches: bust or chest, waist, hips, length and sleeve. One inch is 2.54 cm, so a 36-inch bust is about 91 cm. Measure every size, not only the one in the photo.

Label sizes in the system your buyers use and show the others beside it. Tezeon, an Accra-based online store, prints Ghana, UK, EU and US sizes side by side, with body measurements in centimetres; its women's small is a UK 8, an EU 36 and a US 4. If your stock arrives labelled in only one system, add the conversions yourself.

Put the size chart where the question starts: a pinned post or Instagram highlight, your WhatsApp catalog, and every product page. Add a fit note when you know one, such as "runs small, size up". Before you confirm an order, ask for the buyer's usual size and measurements in the chat. It takes a minute and saves a delivery trip.

Where should you sell clothes online in Ghana?

Most clothing sellers in Ghana can start on social media for free and add a marketplace or their own store later. Each channel costs something different: your time, a commission or a monthly fee. Here is how the main options compare at the time of writing (September 2026), from each platform's own pages:

Instagram and TikTok are where people find you; WhatsApp is where they decide. Jumia brings buyers who have never heard of you, but a 20% commission is a lot on clothes with thin margins, so price for it. Tonaton, now part of Jiji Group, suits clearing single pieces. Your own store pays off once orders are steady and you want to run ads straight to a checkout.

How do you sell clothes on Instagram in Ghana?

In Ghana you sell on Instagram through your profile and your DMs, not an in-app shop. Meta's shops and product tags only work for businesses located in a supported country, and Meta's list does not include Ghana. Since September 2025, even shops in supported countries send buyers to the seller's own website to pay. Your job is to make the path from post to payment short:

A Paystack Payment Page gives you one link for MoMo and card payments that you can paste into any chat. Paystack's Starter account works without a registered business until total collections reach GHS 30,000. When ads start sending more people than you can answer by hand, a store with Paystack at checkout is the next step; our guide "Does Shopify work in Ghana?" explains the setup.

  • Switch to a free professional account and write a bio that says what you sell, where you deliver and how to order.
  • Pin three posts: your size chart, your delivery prices, and real photos or messages from happy customers.
  • Put a WhatsApp link or your store link in your bio, and use the same number everywhere.
  • Put the price on every post. "DM for price" loses buyers who will not ask.
  • Reply fast, then move the order to WhatsApp and send a payment link or your MoMo details.

How should you price, deliver and collect payment?

Set prices from the full cost of each sale, not from what other pages charge: the item, packaging, your time, payment fees, any marketplace commission, exchanges and the share of ad spend each order carries. On a GHS 250 dress, Paystack's 1.95% is about GHS 4.90, while a 20% Jumia commission is GHS 50. Know both numbers before you set the price.

Publish delivery prices. Ghana's Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 (Act 772) says online sellers must show the full price including transport costs, and when goods will be dispatched or delivered. In Accra, courier rates are easy to quote upfront: Zippy charges GHS 25 for delivery within 24 hours and GHS 30 for same-day, and GHS 60 next day to Tema, Kasoa, Amasaman and Dodowa. For Kumasi and the regions, get quotes from nationwide couriers such as ShaQ Express.

Offer MoMo first. Paystack charges 1.95% per local payment in Ghana, and Hubtel 1.95% on MTN MoMo and Telecel Cash when you absorb the fee. Keep cash on delivery for buyers who need it, but confirm every COD order on WhatsApp before dispatch, and ask first-time buyers far from you for the delivery fee upfront by MoMo. Our guide "Cash on delivery in Ghana without the fake orders" has the full routine.

What returns and exchange policy do you need?

A written policy is required, not optional. Section 47 of the Electronic Transactions Act requires online sellers to make their return, exchange and refund policy available to buyers. Section 49 goes further: a buyer can cancel an online purchase of goods within fourteen days of receiving them, without a reason and without penalty. The only charge you can pass on is the direct cost of returning the goods.

There are exceptions. The fourteen-day right does not apply to goods made to the consumer's specification, which covers most made-to-measure and custom-sewn pieces, or to goods that by their nature cannot be returned. Say clearly which items you cannot take back, and say it before payment. If you are unsure how the law applies to your stock, ask a lawyer.

In practice, a clear clothing policy covers four points. Write it in plain words, pin it on Instagram, add it to your WhatsApp catalog and store, and send it with every order confirmation, so no buyer can say they never saw it before paying:

  • Size exchanges within 14 days of delivery, if the item is unworn and the tags are on.
  • Who pays delivery on an exchange: the buyer for a change of mind, you for a wrong or faulty item.
  • Refunds go back to the MoMo number or account that paid, within a number of days you state.
  • Items you cannot take back, such as custom-sewn pieces, listed by name.

How do you run first ads and win repeat buyers?

Start with two ad types. A click-to-WhatsApp ad opens a chat with your shop, which suits buyers who want to ask about size and delivery before paying; our guide "Click-to-WhatsApp ads in Ghana" walks through it. A carousel ad shows two or more images or videos in one ad, each with its own headline and link, so each card can be one look.

Use your best sellers, real photos and the price in the first line, and send traffic only where you can close. If the ad points to a store, test the checkout first. In one Ghana fashion store we worked with, checkout conversion rose from 5.88% to 20.35%, and completed checkouts from 4 to 23 across two 30-day windows, after we fixed a Paystack configuration error, put MoMo first and repaired the Meta Pixel.

A buyer who liked their first order is your easiest next sale, and WhatsApp is where you keep them. Label chats in WhatsApp Business, and send new arrivals through broadcast lists; broadcasts only reach people who have saved your number, so ask every buyer to save it. Ask before you add anyone: Act 772 bars unsolicited marketing messages without prior consent and requires an opt-out.

If you want someone to look at your Instagram, store or ads before you spend more, Maxme's free Ads & Store Audit sends a short video review on WhatsApp within 2 working days, with the three fixes that matter most.

Frequently asked questions

Does it cost anything to sell clothes on Instagram?

Yes. An Instagram professional account is free, and Instagram takes no fee when you sell through posts and DMs. Meta's shops and product tags are not available to Ghana-based businesses at the time of writing (September 2026), so there is no Meta selling fee to pay. Your costs are ads if you run them, payment fees such as Paystack's 1.95%, and delivery.

How much does Jumia charge to sell clothes in Ghana?

At the time of writing (September 2026), Jumia Ghana's seller hub lists a 20% commission, VAT inclusive, for the Fashion category, plus a shipping contribution that depends on the shipping method. Opening a store and listing products is free. To register you need business registration documents and bank details. Jumia collects payment from buyers and pays sellers weekly.

Can I sell clothes online in Ghana without a registered business?

Yes, on social media. Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp Business need no registration, and a Paystack Starter account takes MoMo and card payments with a Ghana Card or other ID and a TIN until total collections reach GHS 30,000. Jumia asks for business registration, so register before you move onto marketplaces or pass the Paystack limit.

How much does delivery cost in Accra?

It depends on the courier and the speed. At the time of writing (September 2026), Zippy, an Accra courier, publishes flat rates of GHS 25 for delivery within 24 hours and GHS 30 for same-day delivery anywhere in Accra, and GHS 60 for next-day delivery to Tema, Kasoa, Amasaman and Dodowa. Show your delivery fee before the buyer pays, as Ghana's Electronic Transactions Act requires.

Do I have to accept returns on clothes sold online in Ghana?

Generally, yes. Under Ghana's Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 (Act 772), a buyer can cancel an online purchase of goods within fourteen days of receiving them, without giving a reason, and can only be charged the direct cost of sending them back. Goods made to the buyer's specification are excluded. Online sellers must also publish their return, exchange and refund policy.

What is the best app for selling items in Ghana?

There is no single best app, because each does one job. Instagram and TikTok get you seen, WhatsApp Business closes the sale and keeps buyers coming back, and Jumia or Tonaton reach people who do not follow you. At the time of writing (September 2026), Jumia charges a 20% commission on fashion, while Tonaton listings are free with optional paid promotion.
