To sell on Instagram in Ghana, switch to a free professional account, post real products with the cedi price in the caption, answer DMs within minutes, move serious buyers to WhatsApp, and take payment by MoMo or a payment link before dispatch. Instagram's in-app shop and checkout are not open to Ghana-based sellers, so the sale happens in a chat, not in the app.
How do I sell directly on Instagram?
In Ghana, you sell directly on Instagram through your profile, your posts and your DMs, not through an in-app shop. Meta's Shops on Facebook and Instagram, including product tags, only work for businesses located in a supported country. When we checked Meta's list in September 2026, the full experience covered only the United States, with a beta or limited version in 21 other countries. None of them is in Africa.
Even where Shops work, nobody pays inside Instagram any more. Meta says that since September 2025, shops use website checkout: buyers tap through to the seller's own site, and Meta no longer processes shop payments or handles disputes. So Ghanaian sellers are not missing a magic button. Every seller now owns the path from post to payment, and in Ghana that path usually runs through a chat.
The path is familiar: a reel catches someone, they send a DM asking "how much?", you reply with the price and delivery fee, they pay by MoMo or a payment link, and a rider delivers. Instagram is a smaller pond than Facebook here. DataReportal, using Meta's ad tools, counted about 2.3 million Instagram users in Ghana in late 2025, against 8.4 million on Facebook, so post to both.

How do you set up an Instagram profile that sells?
Start with a professional account. It is free: in the app, open Settings, tap Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account, and choose Business, which Instagram recommends for retailers and brands. You get a contact button, insights and ad tools. One trade-off: professional accounts cannot be private, so everything you post is public, which is what a shop wants anyway.
Your bio has one job: tell a stranger what you sell, where you deliver and how to order, in three short lines. For example: "Ladies' shoes, sizes 36 to 42. Delivery in Accra and Tema, other regions by courier. Tap the WhatsApp link to order." Put what you sell in the name field too, such as "Ama Shoes | Accra", so people know what you sell before they read a word of the bio.
Instagram lets you add up to five links to your profile. Make the first one a WhatsApp click-to-chat link: https://wa.me/ followed by your number in international format without the leading zero, so 024 123 4567 becomes wa.me/233241234567. When we checked from Accra in September 2026, Instagram's own WhatsApp link feature showed as unavailable in Ghana, so the wa.me link is the reliable route.
Then treat Story Highlights as your shop counter, the first thing a new visitor taps. Stories you add to a highlight stay on your profile until you remove them, even after the story itself disappears. Five highlights answer most questions before anyone has to ask:
- Prices: one story per product range, with the cedi price written on the image.
- Delivery: the areas you cover, the fee for each and how many days it takes.
- How to order: DM or WhatsApp, pay, then delivery, in three frames.
- Reviews: real customer messages, shared with permission and with names and numbers hidden.
- Sizes or specs: size charts, colours and what comes in the box.
What content sells on Instagram in Ghana?
Reels bring new people; carousels close the sale. Use reels for reach: a short clip of the product in someone's hand, in daylight, turned so buyers see the size, texture and finish. Use carousels for detail. Instagram allows up to 20 photos and videos in one carousel, but videos inside a carousel do not count as reels and do not show in the Reels tab, so post your best video as a reel on its own.
Film what buyers doubt. For clothes, that is fit on a real body. For phones and gadgets, it is the sealed box and the device switching on. For beauty, it is the seal and the expiry date. Show the packing and the rider collecting parcels too. A reel of ten parcels leaving your shop tells a buyer in Kumasi that you really deliver, better than any caption can.
Then the price-in-caption debate. "DM for price" does bring more DMs, which is why sellers like it, but many buyers never ask. They assume the price is high, or that it changes depending on who is asking. Put the cedi price in the caption and on the image, and let the DM be about size, colour and delivery. When we audit Ghanaian Instagram shops, hidden prices and slow replies are the two leaks we flag most.
How do you move a buyer from DM to WhatsApp?
Instagram DMs are fine for the first question, but the order itself is easier to run on WhatsApp, where buyers already chat with friends and family, and the free WhatsApp Business app gives you labels, greeting and away messages, and one place to keep every order and payment. The move should feel like a service, not a brush-off. Answer the first question fully in the DM, then offer WhatsApp for the order itself. If a buyer prefers to finish in the DM, let them.
Automate the first reply. Meta Business Suite lets an Instagram business account send an instant reply to first messages, an away message, and answers to frequently asked questions. On desktop, it can also send automatic replies to messages containing up to five keywords you choose. A keyword such as PRICE can send your price list and your wa.me link while you are busy serving a customer in the shop. Then hand over in a way that keeps the buyer warm:
- DM reply: the price, the delivery fee to their area and one question, such as "Which size?"
- Once they choose: "Let me send the payment details on WhatsApp so you have a record", with your wa.me link.
- First WhatsApp message: a photo of the exact item, the total with delivery, and your payment link or MoMo details in your business name.
- Label the chat Pending payment, then Paid when the money lands. Our guide "Click-to-WhatsApp ads in Ghana" explains why these labels matter once you run ads.
How do you take MoMo payment safely?
You have three safe routes. A MoMo wallet in your business name lets buyers check the name on the prompt before they approve. A payment link gives a proper receipt: Paystack Payment Pages can be shared on WhatsApp or Instagram with no website, accept MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo MoMo plus cards, and cost 1.95% per local transaction at the time of writing (September 2026). The third route is payment on delivery.
No registered business yet? Paystack's Starter Business account in Ghana needs a government ID, a tax identification number and a personal bank account or MoMo number, all in the same name, and it works until your collections reach GHS 30,000. With a link, the buyer gets a prompt on their phone and approves it with a one-time code and their PIN. Our guide "Paystack vs Hubtel vs expressPay" compares the gateways.
Buyers are right to be careful. Ghana's Cyber Security Authority recorded 210 online shopping fraud cases, with losses above GHS 410,000, between January and October 2024. Its warning describes fake sellers on social media who take advance payment into MoMo wallets whose names do not match the shop, then block the buyer. So make your name match everywhere: profile, payment prompt and receipt.
Protect yourself too. Never release goods on a screenshot or an SMS alone: check your MoMo balance in the app or USSD menu, or the transaction status in your gateway dashboard. The Authority tells MoMo users never to share their PIN and to check that payment texts come from the network itself. If a caller says they sent money "by mistake" and wants it back, check your balance first. Report fraud to the Authority on 292.
How do you deliver orders and collect reviews?
Decide delivery before the first ad, not during the first chat. Set a fee per zone, for example Accra and Tema by rider and other regions by courier or bus parcel service, and put it in your Delivery highlight. Ask each buyer for a phone number, a landmark and their GhanaPostGPS digital address. Couriers such as Yango Delivery offer express and cargo deliveries in Ghana, with SMS tracking updates for the person receiving the parcel.
Send a dispatch message with the rider's name and number and a photo of the packed parcel. For cash on delivery, confirm every order on WhatsApp before it leaves; our guide "Cash on delivery in Ghana without the fake orders" covers confirmation and MoMo deposits. Keep a simple record of every order: the date, item, area, amount and how the buyer paid. It becomes your list of repeat customers.
Reviews come from asking at the right moment: a day after delivery, with one easy question such as "Did the size fit well?" Screenshot good replies only with the buyer's permission, hide their name and number, and add them to your Reviews highlight. Ghana's Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) governs how businesses use people's personal data, so ask before you post anything that identifies a customer.
Ask happy buyers for a Google review as well, using the review link or QR code from your Google Business Profile. Those reviews appear when people search for your shop's name. Google forbids offering discounts or free items in exchange for reviews, so ask, and do not pay.
When should you start Instagram ads: boost or Ads Manager?
Start ads when three things are true: your profile answers price, delivery and ordering without a DM; you can reply to messages within minutes during business hours; and some of your posts already bring buyers without ads. Ads multiply what your page already does. If posts get likes but no orders, fix the offer, the photos or the price first, because paying for more views of a weak post only makes the loss bigger.
Boosting is the quick route: open your professional dashboard, tap Ad tools, pick a post and choose a goal of more profile visits, website visits or messages. One trap: if you add funds in the Instagram iPhone app, a 30% Apple service fee may apply in most regions, so boost from instagram.com in a browser instead. Meta also has no cedi billing, so your ads are charged in a currency such as US dollars.
Ads Manager is the route once you want orders rather than attention. It adds WhatsApp as a message destination, purchase optimisation from labelled chats, and proper audiences and testing; our guides "Boost post or Ads Manager?" and "Click-to-WhatsApp ads in Ghana" walk through it. If you would rather hand the ads over, Maxme's Lite plan runs Meta ads from GHS 2,500 a month (about US$215), excluding VAT and your ad budget; see our pricing page.
Before you put money behind any of this, our free Ads & Store Audit will look at your Instagram, website or ads and send you a short video review on WhatsApp within 2 working days, with the three fixes that matter most.
