Dropshipping in Ghana means your supplier ships each order straight to your customer, so you hold no stock. A parcel from abroad pays duty at the Ghana Post counter, and we found no published value below which a parcel is duty free. Test-order from your supplier, and agree who pays duty before you sell.
What is dropshipping, and can it work in Ghana?
Shopify's help centre defines dropshipping as selling products without handling inventory or shipping. When a customer orders, the details pass from your store to your supplier, who picks, packs and ships to the customer under your store's branding.
It can work in Ghana, but two parts of the model change here. Parcels from abroad go through Ghana's customs, and your customers pay by Mobile Money, not by card. Both decide whether you make money, so plan them before you list a single product.
Shopify's page is clear on what stays with you: you remain responsible for customer service and order tracking, and for the tax and customs obligations that apply to cross-border sales. The supplier ships the item, but the customer still sees you.
Should your supplier be abroad or in Ghana?
You have two routes. An overseas supplier ships each parcel to Ghana, so every order goes through customs. A supplier inside Ghana sends the item locally, so no import duty applies, and the delivery side looks like normal local selling.
We found no official Ghana delivery time for the large overseas marketplaces, and the blog figures we saw disagree, so we do not quote one. Ask any overseas supplier for a written delivery estimate to Ghana, and test it with your own order.
Swipe the table sideways to see every column.
| Overseas supplier | Supplier in Ghana | |
|---|---|---|
| Customs duty | Yes, on each parcel | No import duty on the parcel |
| Who collects the parcel | The recipient, at the post office or from a courier | Delivered like any local order |
| Delivery time | Ask the supplier; GRA publishes none | Ask the supplier |
| Pay the supplier | Before the customer's parcel arrives | Before the customer's parcel arrives |
What happens at customs when a dropshipped parcel arrives?
GRA's customs FAQ says postal articles attract customs duties in Ghana. GRA's page on importing through the post office describes the steps: a delivery note goes in the recipient's box, post office staff check the recipient's identity, the recipient opens the parcel for examination, and a customs officer works out the duty from the item's classification.
The cost of postage is used as the freight value, with a 1% charge added, and the insurance value on the item is taken into account. You pay at the Ghana Post counter, which issues two receipts: one for Ghana Post's charge and one for customs duty. Restricted goods need a permit from the relevant agency before they clear.
Your customer stands at that counter, not you. If the buyer did not expect a bill, they may refuse the parcel. Decide before the first sale whether your price includes duty, and say so on the product page.
GRA also says goods not claimed within three months are confiscated to the State and auctioned. A customer who ignores the delivery note puts your supplier's goods and your refund at risk.
How much duty and VAT will the customer pay?
GRA's tariff has five duty bands: 0%, 5%, 10%, 20% and 35%. Finished goods for final consumers sit in the 20% band, and most things dropshippers sell, such as clothes, gadgets and homeware, are finished goods. The exact rate depends on the item's classification.
VAT is added on top. From 1 January 2026, GRA lists VAT at 15% with the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) at 2.5% and the GETFund Levy at 2.5%. GRA says the value for VAT on imports is the customs value plus the import duties, so the tax is charged on a bigger base than the item price.
GRA's tariff page also lists smaller charges, such as an examination fee and a processing fee, and gives no rates for them. Do not copy a percentage from a blog; ask the post office or your clearing agent for the actual bill on a real parcel. Our guide 'How to import goods from China to Ghana to sell online (2026)' covers bulk imports and clearing agents.
How do you get paid in a dropshipping business?
You pay your supplier before your customer's parcel arrives, so collect your customer's money first. Cash on delivery is risky for this model because you are already out of pocket, and our guide 'Cash on delivery in Ghana without the fake orders' explains how to cut fake orders if you offer it.
For Mobile Money checkout, read 'How to add Mobile Money payments to your online store in Ghana', and compare providers in 'Paystack vs Hubtel vs expressPay: MoMo payments for Ghana stores'. If you plan to build on Shopify, 'Does Shopify work in Ghana? A 2026 answer for sellers' covers what it supports here. For card questions, see 'Does Stripe or PayPal work in Ghana? What to use for your store (2026)'.
What should you register before you start?
Start with your tax number. GRA says an individual's Ghana Card PIN is the TIN, and our guide 'How to get a TIN in Ghana: Ghana Card PIN or business TIN (2026)' covers the steps. GRA's customs FAQ also lists a TIN among the documents for airport clearance.
If you want a business name, ORC charged a GHS 130 processing fee at the time of writing (October 2026), with a mandatory yearly renewal of GHS 70.
VAT comes later. GRA's VAT page says the registration threshold for businesses that deal in goods is GHS 750,000, up from GHS 200,000, under the Value Added Tax Act, 2025 (Act 1151). Below that, the rules on duty and import VAT above still apply to the parcels.
How do you choose a dropshipping supplier?
Shopify's guidance lists what to look for. Avoid suppliers that charge monthly fees, and prefer those that do not sell directly to the public. Look for proven expertise in their product category and dedicated customer support, centralised warehouses with faster shipping, and a record of processing orders efficiently.
Add two Ghana checks. Place a test order to your own address and note the delivery time, the packaging and what you paid at the post office. And ask the supplier in writing what they do about wrong, damaged or missing items, because your customer will come to you first.
How do you find customers for a dropshipping store?
Your margin has to pay for the ad and still leave a profit. Our guide 'How much do Facebook ads cost in Ghana? (2026)' shows how to turn ad spend into a cost per order, and 'Facebook ads not converting in Ghana? Why chats aren't sales' covers what to fix when people ask questions and do not buy.
Do the sum with the customs bill included: item cost, shipping, duty and VAT on the parcel, and the cost of winning the order. If the number does not work for one product, try a different product before you scale spend.
Maxme's free Ads & Store Audit reviews your ads and store and sends a short video on WhatsApp within 2 working days, with the three fixes that matter most. Maxme's Lite plan runs Meta ads from GHS 2,500 a month (about US$215), excluding VAT and your ad budget; see our pricing page.
