To open a Paystack account in Ghana, sign up free at paystack.com, then complete the Compliance page in your dashboard. A Starter account needs your ID, your TIN and a personal bank or MoMo account in the same name, and stops at GHS 30,000 in total payments. A Registered account needs your ORC papers and an account in the business's name. Paystack says it reviews documents within 48 hours.
What do you need to open a Paystack account in Ghana?
Paystack is licensed here. The Bank of Ghana lists Paystack Ghana LTD among its approved institutions in the PSP Enhanced category, which covers merchant acquiring and payment gateway services. Paystack's Ghana terms say businesses, sole proprietors and charities located in Ghana can open an account.
Opening the account is free, and Paystack says it takes a few minutes. You start in test mode, where no real money moves, and go live once Paystack approves your details. Ghana has two account types, and the one you pick decides the documents you upload and the account your money lands in:
Swipe the table sideways to see every column.
| Starter business | Registered business | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | Sellers not yet registered with the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) | Sole proprietors and companies registered with ORC |
| Documents | Ghana Card, passport, driver's licence or voter's card, plus a TIN | Sole proprietor: ORC certificate of registration. Company: certificate of incorporation, Form 3 (Form 3B if limited by guarantee) and the company TIN |
| Payout account | Personal bank or MoMo account in your own name | Corporate bank or MoMo account in the registered business name |
| Limit | GHS 30,000 in total payments, for the life of the account | No collection limit |
| Missing features | Transfers, Virtual Terminal, manual payouts and a Paystack balance | None of these are missing |
Starter or Registered: which should you open?
Open a Starter account if you sell from Instagram or WhatsApp and have not registered the business yet; Paystack built it for merchants who have not registered with the regulators. Every detail must belong to one person. Paystack says the ID, the TIN and the payout account must match, and that it cannot activate the account if they do not. GRA's guidance says the Ghana Card PIN became the TIN for individuals from 1 April 2021.
The catch is the limit. A Starter account can receive GHS 30,000 in total over its life, and at that point Paystack disables payments until you upgrade. Starter accounts also have no Paystack balance and cannot send Transfers or use the Virtual Terminal, Paystack's QR and USSD tool for taking payments in person.
Plan the upgrade before you need it. Register a business name with ORC, which charged a GHS 130 processing fee at the time of writing (October 2026), then go to Compliance, open Profile and change the business type to Registered. A sole proprietor uploads the ORC certificate of registration; a company uploads its certificate of incorporation, Form 3 and TIN, plus details of anyone who owns 25% or more. Start well before GHS 30,000, so payments never stop in the middle of a campaign.
How do you sign up and activate the account?
Create the account with your email address, confirm it, and you land in test mode. There you can build a Payment Page or connect your store and run practice payments. Then open the Compliance page and fill in each section: a Starter business sees Profile, Contact, Owner and Account, and a Registered business sees Profile, Contact, Account and Documents.
Paystack says a business goes live on its own once every field is complete and the documents are verified, and that it reviews submitted documents within 48 hours. If something needs fixing, its review team emails you. You know you are live when the dashboard switches to Live Mode and the toggle turns green.
The dashboard also shows an activation status. Pre-approved means you can start taking real payments while Paystack finishes its checks, though it may pause payouts in the meantime. Awaiting Review means Paystack is still checking, Approved means you are done, and Needs Attention means you have something to fix.
Why do Paystack activations get delayed?
Paystack names three causes of a Needs Attention status: an expired document, information that does not match official records, and uploads that are unclear or unreadable. Each one is cheap to avoid before you submit.
Check names first. On a Starter account, the ID, the TIN and the payout account must all be in the same person's name, so a relative's MoMo number will not do. On a Registered account, the payout account must carry the business's registered name, not the owner's personal name. Proof-of-address documents must be less than six months old, and Paystack accepts a GhanaPost GPS address from Ghana-based businesses.
Some businesses cannot open in Ghana at all. Paystack's list of businesses it does not support in Ghana includes cryptocurrency trading, forex trading and currency exchange, and goods on the Ghana Revenue Authority's customs list of prohibited and restricted imports. Others, including marketplaces, schools, pharmacies, travel agencies and liquor sellers, can open only as Registered businesses. If activation stalls, write to reviews@paystack.com.
Where does Paystack pay your money, and when?
Paystack's automatic payouts land on the next working day, in the bank account or MoMo wallet on your account. Payouts skip weekends and public holidays, so sales made on Friday and Saturday arrive on Monday. Bank payouts wait until GHS 50 has built up; MoMo payouts have no minimum. A payout you request below the minimum costs GHS 5.
The payout account has to match the business type. A Starter account pays into a personal bank or MoMo account whose details match your ID. A Registered business pays into a corporate bank account or corporate MoMo account in the name on its registration document.
Plan cash around refunds too. Paystack keeps its fee when you refund a customer, takes the refund from your next payout, and says the money reaches the customer within 3 to 10 working days. From 15 October 2026, Paystack limits refunds and disputes to one year after the transaction date.
What does Paystack cost in Ghana?
At the time of writing (October 2026), Paystack charges 1.95% per local transaction in Ghana, the same for MoMo, cards and bank transfers. International cards also cost 1.95%, and Paystack charges and settles them in cedis by default. Opening the account is free, and Paystack offers volume discounts. A GHS 200 sale costs GHS 3.90 in fees.
Sending money out costs extra: GHS 1 per transfer to a MoMo wallet and GHS 8 to a bank account, for Registered businesses that can use Transfers. On Shopify, add Shopify's own fee for outside payment providers: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, at the time of writing. Our guide 'Does Shopify work in Ghana?' works through what that means per sale.
Answer chargebacks the day they arrive. Paystack's support centre gives Ghanaian businesses 48 hours, counted on business days, before it accepts the chargeback for you and reverses the full amount; its Ghana merchant agreement says 24 hours. Paystack charges no penalty when you accept one. You can list up to five email addresses to receive dispute notices.
How do you take payments with Paystack without a website?
Payment Pages give you a link to share on WhatsApp, Instagram or by email, and Paystack's invoices work without a website too. Paystack says its Storefront, a simple online shop with no setup or subscription fee, is open to all its merchants in Ghana, with a fee on each sale. The free Paystack merchant app lets you check payments on your phone.
Customers in Ghana can pay with MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash or AT Money, approving with a one-time code and their PIN. They can also pay with a Visa, Mastercard or Verve card, or by bank transfer to a temporary account number that expires after 30 minutes. Paystack lists Google Pay for Visa and Mastercard holders in Ghana as well.
Before you share a link with buyers, test it with real money: a GHS 1 Payment Page, paid once on each network your buyers use. Our guide 'How to add Mobile Money payments to your online store in Ghana' covers testing on Shopify and WooCommerce, and 'Paystack vs Hubtel vs expressPay' compares Paystack with the two main Ghanaian gateways.
How do you keep a Paystack account safe?
Turn on two-factor authentication, which asks for a code from an authenticator app at every login, and make it compulsory for your team. Invite staff from the Team tab instead of sharing your password. Paystack has six default roles, from Admin to Customer Support, so each person gets only the access their job needs.
Keep the Paystack account, the payout account and any store domain in your business's name, never a developer's. Maxme's Store Launch starts the Paystack or Hubtel application on day one, because approval can take a few days, and builds the store with MoMo checkout for GHS 5,000 (about US$430) on WooCommerce or GHS 6,000 (about US$517) on Shopify, one-off and excluding VAT; see our pricing page.
If your checkout already runs on Paystack and sales still look low, Maxme's free Ads & Store Audit checks every step from "how much?" to paid and sends a short video on WhatsApp within 2 working days, with the three fixes that matter most.
