Stripe's own country list shows Ghana as "Extended network" and links to Paystack, not to a normal Stripe signup. So a Ghanaian store takes payments through Paystack, or through Hubtel or expressPay for mobile money. We could not confirm from PayPal's own pages that a Ghana account can receive payments, so do not build checkout on it before you test.
Does Stripe work in Ghana?
Stripe's global availability page lists the countries where it operates. At the time of writing (October 2026) it lists Ghana under the label "Ghana Extended network", and the entry links to a Paystack page, paystack.com/stripe/ghana, instead of a Stripe signup form.
The page does not define "Extended network", so we cannot tell you from Stripe's own words which Stripe features a Ghana business gets. What the page does show is the route: in Ghana, Stripe sends you to Paystack. For a Ghanaian online seller, Paystack is the account you open.
What should a Ghana store use to take payments instead?
Use a gateway built for Ghana, with mobile money. Paystack's help centre says customers in Ghana can pay with MTN, Airtel/Tigo and Telecel (formerly Vodafone) mobile money, and that the mobile money channel costs 1.95% per transaction. Its pricing article lists 1.95% for local transactions in Ghana across cards, mobile money and bank transfer, with no cap shown for Ghana.
Most Ghanaian buyers pay with MoMo first, so check this before anything else. Our guide 'How to open a Paystack account in Ghana: Starter or Registered' walks through the account, and 'Paystack vs Hubtel vs expressPay: MoMo payments for Ghana stores' compares the three gateways side by side. 'How to add Mobile Money payments to your online store in Ghana' covers the checkout itself.
| What you need | Where to look first |
|---|---|
| MoMo and local cards for Ghanaian buyers | Paystack, Hubtel or expressPay |
| A Stripe account | Stripe's page routes Ghana to Paystack |
| Receiving PayPal payments | Not confirmed by PayPal's own pages for Ghana |

Does PayPal work in Ghana?
We could not confirm it from PayPal. PayPal's Ghana home page says only that an account with PayPal is required to send and receive money. The pages we opened for fees and for the list of countries either showed United States rates or gave no country rows, so they tell us nothing about Ghana.
One PayPal help article, written for Nigeria, says that in some countries certain PayPal services may be available only for cross-border transactions, and that receiving money in Nigeria requires linking your account to a licensed local partner. It names no other country, so we cannot say whether anything similar applies in Ghana.
Many blogs describe Ghana accounts as send-only, and others offer workarounds. They disagree with each other, and none of them is PayPal, so we leave their claims out. If a customer abroad wants to pay you through PayPal, open your own account, then test a small payment end to end, including getting the money out to your bank or MoMo wallet, before you put a PayPal button on your store.
How do you check any payment gateway before you build on it?
Ask the same five questions of every gateway, and get the answers in writing from the provider's own pages or support.
- Is Ghana on the provider's own list of countries, and under what label?
- Can your Ghanaian buyers pay with MTN, Telecel and AT mobile money, or only with cards?
- What does a successful sale cost, and is it the same for MoMo, cards and international cards?
- In which currency do you get paid, how long does a payout take, and where does it land?
- Does your store platform have a plugin or app for it, and has someone made a real test payment through it?
What does this mean for your store and your ads?
Payments sit at the end of every ad. If the payment step fails, the money spent on the ad is gone, so settle the gateway before you spend on Meta. 'Facebook ads not converting in Ghana? Why chats aren't sales' covers what to fix when people click but do not pay.
Maxme Store Launch, our own price: GHS 5,000 (about US$430) on WooCommerce or GHS 6,000 (about US$517) on Shopify, one-off and excluding VAT, with MoMo checkout through Paystack or Hubtel; see our pricing page. If you already have a store and sales look low, Maxme's free Ads & Store Audit checks your ads and checkout and sends a short video on WhatsApp within 2 working days, with the three fixes that matter most.
