Facebook ads usually stop converting in Ghana because of what happens after the click: tracking that cannot see MoMo, WhatsApp or cash-on-delivery sales, the wrong objective, slow or vague replies, a checkout that hides MoMo or fails, missing trust signals, a mismatched offer, and constant edits that restart learning. Fix them in that order before you change the ad.
Why are my Facebook ads not converting?
In most cases the ad is doing its job. People see it, tap it and ask questions. The sale is lost afterwards: in a reply that takes three hours, a checkout that fails on Telecel Cash, or a tracking setup that never told Meta who actually paid. Changing the picture or the audience does nothing when the leak is further down.
Check the causes in this order, because each one hides the next. If tracking is broken, you cannot trust any number below it. If the objective is wrong, Meta is finding the wrong people. Only once those two are right does it make sense to judge your replies, your checkout, your trust signals and the offer itself.
- Tracking that cannot see MoMo, WhatsApp or cash-on-delivery sales
- An engagement objective or a boost when you wanted sales
- Slow or price-dodging replies in DMs and on WhatsApp
- Checkout friction: MoMo not first, gateway errors, forced sign-up, slow pages
- Trust gaps: no real photos, no reviews, unclear delivery
- An offer or audience that does not match
- Learning-phase resets from constant edits
Is broken tracking teaching Meta to find the wrong people?
The Meta Pixel runs in the buyer's browser and only sees what happens on your website. In Ghana, many sales happen elsewhere: the buyer approves a MoMo prompt and closes the tab, pays after a WhatsApp chat, or hands cash to the rider. If Meta hears about only a few of your sales, it optimises toward whoever those few buyers were and keeps spending on people like them.
Fix the website side first. Run the Pixel together with the Conversions API, which sends events from your server and is less exposed to browser settings and ad blockers. Shopify and WooCommerce integrations can handle deduplication, so a purchase seen by both is counted once. Then place a real order and watch it arrive in the Test Events tool in Events Manager.
Next, cover the sales outside the website. Share WhatsApp orders with Meta through the WhatsApp Business app's purchase labels or the Conversions API for Business Messaging. Cash-on-delivery orders can go into a dataset as offline events, through the Conversions API or a manual upload in Events Manager. Meta discontinued its older Offline Conversions API in May 2025, so ignore guides that still recommend it.
Are you running the wrong objective?
Meta gives you what you ask for. Boost a post for engagement and it finds people who like, comment and share, who are often not the people who pay. Meta's own help centre says boosted posts have fewer customisation and targeting options than ads built in Ads Manager, where you can choose objectives such as Sales and Leads.
Inside Ads Manager, the performance goal matters as much as the objective. A Traffic campaign buys clicks and visits, not buyers. If you sell on a website, choose Sales with the Purchase event once your tracking works. If you sell in chats, choose Sales or Engagement with WhatsApp as the message destination, and move to "Maximize number of purchases through messaging" once you qualify.
Are slow or vague replies losing the sale in your DMs?
For a shop that sells through Instagram DMs and WhatsApp, the reply is the checkout. A buyer who asks "how much?" and hears nothing for hours has already asked two other sellers. Answers like "check DM" or "price in inbox" under a public post feel like a trick, and many people simply scroll on to the next shop.
Answer with the price, real photos, delivery cost and time, and a MoMo number or payment link in the first reply. Use the WhatsApp Business app's greeting message, away message and quick replies so nobody waits in silence. Then count paid orders per ad, not chats per ad. Chats are not sales, and a cheap chat from a curious scroller earns you nothing.
Is your checkout blocking people who want to pay with MoMo?
If you sell on a website, the last page is where money is won or lost. Common leaks in Ghana: mobile money listed below cards or missing, a gateway setting that fails for one network, a store that forces shoppers to create an account first, and pages so heavy they crawl on mobile data in Kumasi or Tamale. Each one looks fine from a laptop on office Wi-Fi.
Check each one yourself. On Shopify, make sure "Require customers to sign in to their account before checkout" is switched off. On WooCommerce, turn on guest checkout. Then place small real orders on your phone with MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AirtelTigo Money, all of which Paystack supports in Ghana, and confirm each one reaches your store dashboard.
One anonymised case shows what is at stake. A Ghana-based fashion e-commerce brand had three problems at once: a Paystack configuration error that made checkout fail for some payment methods, MoMo not showing first, and a Meta Pixel firing incorrectly. After Maxme fixed all three, checkout conversion went from 5.88% to 20.35%, and completed checkouts from 4 to 23, comparing two 30-day windows.
Do buyers trust you enough to pay before delivery?
Paying a stranger online feels risky, so buyers look for proof that you are real before they send MoMo. If your page shows only stock photos, no reviews and no clear delivery terms, many will insist on cash on delivery or leave. Show real photos and short videos of your stock, customer reviews shared with permission, your pickup point, and delivery prices by area.
Be specific about delivery, because vague terms read as risk. "We deliver nationwide" is weaker than a line like "Accra and Tema same day, Kumasi next day, pay the rider or pay first by MoMo", with the fee for each area. Clear terms answer the question many buyers are too shy to ask, and they cut the back-and-forth that lets a chat go cold.
An offer that does not fit the audience is the other quiet killer. A GHS 900 handbag shown to a broad audience of students, or a product with no reason to buy this week, will collect likes and questions but few payments. Check that the price, the audience and the promise in the ad match, and that the page or chat repeats the same offer the ad made.
Are constant edits keeping your ads stuck in learning?
Every new or significantly edited ad set goes through a learning phase, when delivery is less stable and cost per result is usually higher. Meta says ad sets usually exit it after about 50 results in the week after the last significant edit. Changing the targeting, the creative or the optimisation event, adding a new ad, or pausing for 7 days or more all restart learning.
Large budget changes can restart it too. So the owner who tweaks the audience on Monday, swaps the picture on Wednesday and doubles the budget on Friday never lets Meta finish learning. If an ad set shows "Learning limited", Meta suggests combining ad sets, widening the audience, raising the budget or choosing a more frequent optimisation event. Make one change, then wait a week.
What should you check before spending another cedi?
Work through the ten points below in order before you touch the creative. Most of these fixes cost nothing but time, and each one makes the next number you read more honest. Tick them off with your team on a Monday, then review paid orders, not chats, the following Monday.
You can do all of it yourself. If you would rather have someone check it for you, the free Maxme Ads & Store Audit at /audit sends a short video review of your ads, Instagram or website on WhatsApp within 2 working days, with the 3 fixes that matter most.
- Place a real test order on your phone and confirm it shows in Events Manager and in your store dashboard.
- Run the Conversions API alongside the Pixel, with deduplication, so each purchase is counted once.
- Share WhatsApp and cash-on-delivery sales with Meta through purchase labels, the Conversions API or offline uploads.
- Use a Sales objective, or Engagement with WhatsApp as the destination, not a boost for likes.
- Reply within minutes with the price, real photos, delivery terms and a way to pay.
- Put MoMo first at checkout and test MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AirtelTigo Money.
- Turn off forced account creation and check that your pages load quickly on mobile data.
- Show real photos, reviews and delivery prices by area wherever buyers decide.
- Match the offer and price to the audience, and repeat the ad's promise on the page or in chat.
- Make one significant edit at a time and give each ad set a week before you judge it.
