To verify your business on Facebook from Ghana, create a Meta business portfolio in your business's legal name, add your Page, Instagram account and ad account, then open Security Center and click Start verification. Meta checks your details against a document such as your ORC certificate, and a decision can take up to 14 business days. Meta says not every business needs it.
What is a Meta business portfolio, and why should you own it?
A business portfolio is the account in Meta Business Suite that holds your Facebook Page, Instagram account, ad accounts, Pixel data and WhatsApp accounts in one place. Meta used to call it Business Manager. Add a Page to your portfolio and Meta treats your business as the Page's owner.
Ownership is hard to undo, which is why it comes before verification. Meta says each asset can belong to only one business portfolio. An ad account you create inside a portfolio stays there for good: Meta's help centre says it cannot be deleted or transferred. The dataset that stores your Pixel data cannot move to another portfolio either.
That means an ad account created in an agency's or a freelancer's portfolio stays theirs when the work ends. Create the portfolio yourself, in your business's name, before anyone runs ads for you, and give outside help access you can take back. Our guide 'How to choose a Facebook ads agency in Ghana' covers the ownership questions to ask before you hire.
How do you create a business portfolio the right way?
Go to business.facebook.com, log in with your personal Facebook profile and choose to create a portfolio. Meta asks for the business name, your first and last name and a business email address, then sends a link to confirm that email. Use the name your customers know: Meta shows it across its apps and asks that it match your business's public name.
A few rules shape what comes next. You can create up to 2 portfolios yourself, though you can belong to any number. Meta says a new portfolio may not have every advertising feature at first, and it can create only 1 ad account. That rises to 3 once a campaign has delivered and a payment has gone through, so a working card matters from day one; our guide 'How to pay for Facebook and Instagram ads from Ghana' covers the cards that work.
Then lock the portfolio down. Meta recommends, without requiring it, 2 active people with full control, so one lost login cannot lock the business out, and full control for 10 people or fewer. Turn on two-factor authentication for everyone. Meta can require it for portfolios more than 90 days old, it must be on before you share assets with a partner, and Meta says people without it may lose access to advertising.
How do you add your Page, Instagram, ad account and WhatsApp?
Everything lives under Settings in Meta Business Suite. Add your Facebook Page and your Instagram account under Accounts. Each Instagram account can sit in only one portfolio, so if a former manager added yours to theirs, ask them to remove it before you add it to your own.
For ads you have three choices: create a new ad account, claim one your business already owns, or request access to one that belongs to someone else. Creating one makes it a permanent part of your portfolio, which is what you want for your own advertising. Create the dataset for your Meta Pixel in the same portfolio, for the same reason.
WhatsApp accounts are created under Accounts, then WhatsApp accounts. Like a Page or an ad account, a WhatsApp business account belongs to one portfolio only. If you plan to use the WhatsApp Business Platform through a provider, set it up here, in your own portfolio, so the WhatsApp account stays with your business.
To let an agency work on your assets without owning them, go to Settings, then Users, then Partners, click Add, choose to give a partner access to your assets and enter the agency's business portfolio ID. The agency needs a portfolio of its own. You pick full control or partial access for each asset, partial access is set task by task, and a partner cannot pass your assets on to another business.
What does business verification give you, and do you need it?
Business verification tells Meta that the portfolio belongs to a real, registered business. Meta's conditions are that the business is registered with local authorities and has an official phone number or mailing address. Verification does not give your Page a badge. Meta Verified, a paid subscription, is a separate product, covered at the end of this guide.
Meta lists what verification brings: faster increases to your daily spending limit, higher access for apps built on Meta's developer platform, the Meta Business Partner badge for agencies, and some features of the WhatsApp Business Platform. On the Platform, a new portfolio starts with a messaging limit of 250, and verifying the business is one of the ways to lift it to 2,000.
Meta also says that not every business needs to verify, or has the option. Open Security Center in Meta Business Suite: you will see either Start verification or Ineligible for verification. For a shop running ads from its own Page and answering in the free WhatsApp Business app, the main gain is faster spending-limit increases. Verification matters more once you move to the WhatsApp Business Platform.
Which Ghanaian documents match Meta's list?
Meta accepts five main types of document, and together they must show your legal business name plus your official address or phone number. They must be current and issued by the relevant authority. Meta reads English, and asks for translations with an official translation agency's stamp for anything else. Meta publishes no Ghana list, so the middle column below is our own mapping of Ghanaian papers onto its categories.
Two Ghana details trip people up. ORC issues e-certificates that stay downloadable in your ORC account for 14 days, after which you cannot print them, so save the PDFs the day they arrive. ORC also renews business names every year, at GHS 70 at the time of writing (October 2026), and Meta accepts only documents that are not expired.
You may cover personal details Meta does not need, such as an ID number, before you upload. If you trade without registering, register first: a business name with ORC costs a GHS 130 processing fee at the time of writing, and comes with a certificate of registration that fits Meta's second category.
Swipe the table sideways to see every column.
| Meta's document type | Ghana example (our mapping) | Meta's notes |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate or articles of incorporation | ORC certificate of incorporation and the company's constitution | For companies |
| Business registration or licence document | ORC certificate of registration for a business name, with Form A | For sole proprietors trading under a registered name |
| Government-issued business tax document | A tax certificate issued by GRA | Self-filed tax documents are not accepted |
| Business bank statement | A statement for an account held in the business's name | Must show the legal name and address |
| Utility bill | An electricity or water bill in the business's name | Accepted for address and phone only, never for the legal name |
How do you submit business verification, step by step?
Only someone with full control of the portfolio can verify it. Before you start, check that the legal name, address, phone number and website you will type match your documents letter for letter. Meta asks you to confirm that the details match your legal business entity. The steps at the time of writing (October 2026):
Once verified, think before you edit. Meta says changing the legal name, country, phone number, website or tax ID sends the portfolio through verification again, while adding a missing phone number or website does not. If you need a website and an email address on your own domain, our guide 'How to register a .com.gh domain in Ghana' covers getting both in your business's name.
- In Meta Business Suite, open Settings, then Security Center, and click Start verification.
- Enter your legal business name, address, phone number and website. Meta requires the website to load over HTTPS.
- If Meta finds no matching record, choose My business isn't listed and upload your documents.
- Choose how Meta confirms the business: email, phone call, text message, WhatsApp message or domain verification. An email code only works for an address on your website's domain, so with a Gmail address, use the phone or domain route.
- Submit and wait. Meta says a decision can take up to 14 business days, and it notifies you when the review is complete.
Why does Meta reject business verification, and what can you do?
Meta's own list of rejection reasons is short: false or misleading information, trying to claim a portfolio you do not own, trying to get around the review, and a website that fails to load, is not HTTPS or has a dead link. Start with the names. The legal name on your ORC certificate, the name you typed and the name on your website and bank statement should be identical.
Meta says you may be able to appeal from Security Center, which also shows your verification status. Fix the mismatch or the website before you submit again, instead of sending the same papers twice.
Treat any offer to verify you for a fee with suspicion. Meta warns that third-party businesses cannot get you verified. If Meta has restricted your ad account rather than your business, our guide 'Facebook ad account disabled in Ghana?' covers reviews and appeals.
Is Meta Verified for business the same as business verification?
No. Business verification checks your paperwork inside Meta Business Suite. Meta Verified for businesses is a paid subscription for a Facebook Page, Instagram account or WhatsApp number, with a verified badge and extra features. Meta's business page lists four plans, from US$14.99 to US$499.99 a month for each account, and says plans, benefits and availability vary by region.
Meta does not publish a country list. Its terms say a business must be located in a country where Meta Verified is offered, and WhatsApp's help centre says that if you do not see the Meta Verified option, it is not yet available to you. Look for the option in your account, or under Settings and Business tools in the WhatsApp Business app, before you plan around it.
For a small business, the order that protects you is ownership first, verification when you need what it brings, and a paid badge only if it earns its fee. If you are not sure who owns your ad account, Page or Pixel today, Maxme's free Ads & Store Audit reviews your ads and sends a short video on WhatsApp within 2 working days, with the three fixes that matter most.
